COACHES CORNER

Friends and Alumni of Tufts Baseball, I hope everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday. We hosted the annual Tufts Winter Baseball Clinic this past week for prospective high school students from all over the country. During a time when campus is dormant, there was a lot of excitement in the Carzo Cage with about 70 players showcasing their talent and a number of college coaches watching. Thanks to all the alumni who showed up for the holiday party this past month. It was great to meet some former Jumbos to help me grasp what this program I recently joined is truly about. Congratulations to all of those who won prizes and better luck next year to those who did not. Early January 2nd morning, the entire coaching staff is flying out to attend the American Baseball Coaches Association national convention in Anaheim California. Head Coach Casey was elected as the 4th Vice President of the ABCA so this convention should be a particularly meaningful one for our staff. This is my first convention and with honors being given out to Angel’s manager Mike Scioscia and former Yankee great Dave Winfield, I’m sure it won’t disappoint expectations. It’s getting very exciting with the start of the season fast approaching in less than a month and a half. Pitchers are starting their throwing regiments and players are nearing the end of their lifting cycles in preparation for the lengthy season. The players return to campus in two weeks and captain’s practices start up immediately on the 18th. It should be an interesting year for the NESCAC where most teams have lost the majority of their real impact players. We know we have all the pieces to fill any holes left by the graduated class of 2011 so now its really up to the coaching staff to make sure those guys are prepared to play at the college level. We wish everyone a happy and healthy new year, and hope to see you around at of our games and events this year. I know not everyone is a Pats Fan but let’s hope their defense can step it up for a full 60 minutes and make it through this injury riddled AFC playoff bracket to the Indianapolis. Go Jumbos, Coach Paul Chiampa
