Holiday Gathering Wrap-Up

It was great to see so many guys come back last week for our holiday gathering.  We had another great turnout with 27 alum meeting at Tavern.  A new freebie raffle was instituted this year which proved to be very successful.  The first 5 to arrive received twice the number of tickets than the ensuing attendees, as always it pays to be early at Tufts Baseball events.  Bryan McDavitt '07, Ben Simon '07, Jon Mugar '99, Zack Brown '00 and Matt Lyman '96 were the lucky winners.  Kevin Casey '09 was the final winner of the Tufts Baseball duffle bag.  A special thanks once again to our Alums for contributing generously to Coach Burr's son David's College Fund.  We were able to raise over $400 for the fund. Check out our facebook page for all the photos from the event.

Tufts Baseball would like to thank Dave Bishop '05 and Pro AV Systems Inc. for donating and installing a new sound system and speakers at Huskins Field!

Jumbo Baseball Puts on Clinic for Lincoln-Sudbury Little League

Tufts Baseball alum Jon Cole '00 invited members of the Tufts Baseball team to put on a clinic for Lincoln-Sudbury Little Leaguers on Saturday October 22nd. Jon runs the fall ball program for Lincoln-Sudbury and has put on a couple clinics this fall to help further the development of youth baseball.  Several members of the Tufts Baseball team instructed the clinic in areas of throwing, hitting, infield and outfield.  The little leaguers then put their skill on display in a soft-toss scrimmage that was coached and umpired by the Tufts players. A special thanks for Jon and the Lincoln-Sudbury little leaguers for having us out for the day.  We hope to have them to campus sometime this spring for a game.

Ed Bernstein A'11 to receive Clarence "Pop" Houston Award for Best Male Athlete

2011 Senior Pitcher Ed Bernstein will be honored Friday evening 10/14/11 at 7:30pm at the 2011 Tufts Athletics Annual Awards ceremony!!!

In his senior season in 2011, Bernstein was named the NESCAC and New England Pitcher of the Year and to D3Baseball.com's All-American Second Team. The closer was instrumental in helping the Jumbos win the NESCAC Championship as he did not allow an earned run in 32.2 innings pitched (20 appearances). He compiled a record of 2-1 while earning nine saves and had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 43 to 14. Opponents hit just .127 off of the righthander during the season helping Tufts to a 27-9-1 record and an 11-1 mark in NESCAC East Division play. Bernstein's best outing came on March 24 at N.C. Wesleyan where he went 5.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts in team's epic 16-inning tie during its spring trip.

2011 Diamond Club News

5/11/11

Doug Gentile teed up his Diamond Club membership renewal at the Alumni Golf Tournament last Friday. Thanks Dougie for all your support.

4/28/11

Todd Boutwell '01 has put the 2011 Diamond Club over the top w/ his membership renewal. Todd was always known for the long ball, we still talk about the tape measure shot he hit @ Randolph-Macon. Thanks Todd!! I know there are still some potential Diamond Club (and renewal) members out there, let's set the bar high!!!

4/27/11

Late inning heroics by Jim Downing '91 draw the Jumbos closer than ever to meeting and exceeding our Diamond Club membership goal. Jim has been an ardent supporter, putting in a lot of work towards the alumni weekend each year and also making sure he schedules a "meeting" w/ Coach Clarke to sample wings on the grill. Thanks JD!!!

4/25/11

The class of 94 comes through in the late innings w/ the renewals of two Diamond Club memberships. Dr Matt Zipoli and Jay Rando have come through in the clutch with their support, joining them in this late inning rally is John Andon '84. John is an airline pilot who has been a great supporter of the program. WE NEED TWO MORE MEMBERS TO EXCEED OUR GOAL!!!

4/21/11

The Diamond Club welcomes back Dr. Matt Howard '81. Matt is a great supporter of the program and the Howard family is full of Jumbo alums. Thanks Matt for igniting our late inning rally to meet our Diamond Club goal.

4/4/11

Coming off our 1st league weekend vs. Bates w/ three wins we were greeted by 1999 grad and 2 year captain Pat Fernan's Diamond Club renewal, a great way to star the week. Thanks Pat,we are edging closer to our goal because of great supporters of the program like yourself.

4/1/11

No Aprils Fools in announcing a big influx of Diamond Club members on opening day for the Red Sox!!! Stalwart Mark Fisher '77 leads the way for this outstanding group of supporters. Last time I spoke w/ Mark, he was on the beach in the Caribbean, a smart man. The middle infield duo of Dana Nielsen '96 and John Shelvey '95 step up next. Both were great defenders and continue to shore up the program. Classmates Mike Kratochwill and Mike Ward 1990 renew their Diamond Club memberships again in 2011. Kat has been a vital member of  our golf committee for years and also is the godfather of my youngest, Chris. Wardie is currently coaching @ Salem State and I know he will reinvigorate their program. Our youngest member 2009 grad Dave Katzman renews in 11. Katzy is a loyal Jumbo and tremendous supporter of the program. Finally my younger teammate and friend, Mike Cantalupa '83 has joined the Diamond Club. Mike and I recently had lunch and enjoyed reminiscing about the playing days; we both swore to back up each other's stories about our exploits. Welcome Mike!! These additions to the club get us to 85% of our goal. We still have some members who have not renewed and would love to have a few new members to help us surpass our goal. You can do it Jumbos!!!

3/15/11

Dave Bishop class of 2005 adds his Diamond Club membership as the Jumbos are packing their bags for the train trip south. Dave's support is greatly appreciated. Dave's golf cart escapades are legendary in Tufts baseball lore. Let's keep those Diamond Club memberships coming, with Dave's membership we are at 60% of our goal!!!

3/9/11

As we start to anticipate our southern swing 1992 captain Jack Erickson jumps on board with his Diamond club membership. Jack was a terrific fielding 1st baseman who added pop to our lineups from the left side. We are grateful to Jack for his continued loyalty to the program.

3/4/11

Three more Diamond Club roster spots are taken up with some pretty terrific gentlemen. The Walsh boys Tom '89 and Tom '84 have re-upped their membership for 2011. Tom '89 a right handed swinger was also a sure handed third baseman and one of the all time greats @ Tufts. Tom '94 a left handed stick was an outstanding OF w/ a great OBP. He was also a guy who didn't approve of nepotism. Matt Lyman rounds out these roster additions, Matt has had a profound impact on the Tufts program not only on the field but as an assistant coach and now ardent supporter. the reason I can update a webpage traces back to Matty; he dragged me in to the computer age and for that I am ever grateful. Thanks guys for stepping up. Let's get a big push now as opening day for the Jumbos is 2 weeks from today!!!!

2/23/11

Another update as the Diamond Club roster takes shape. We go off the mainland to announce Robert Cyboron '70 of Hawaii renewing his membership. We are considering a Diamond Club meeting in Robert's home state someday soon. Travelling a little further east to California, Oscar Porter '69 steps to the plate again w/ his 2011 membership. Oscar has been a great supporter of the program and we are very appreciative. The 1950 World Series team continues it's outstanding representation in the Diamond Club with Bob Taft '52. Bob has been a wonderful friend of the program and a welcome ally helping to keep Dave Lincoln in line at the golf outing as only Bob can. A founding father of the Diamond Club Brian Symmons '98 re-ups for '11. Symmy remains to this day one of the best competitors I ever had the privilege to coach. Mike "Sam" Grassi '99 rejoins the DC as well. Sam still remembers the long van trips w/ great fondness. Thanks Sam for the toughness you brought to our program. I am pleased to announce 2 new members in Adam Kacamburas '04 and Bill Carroll '85. Both Kac and Billy were graduate assistant coaches in baseball for the Jumbos. The big difference is I had "some" hair when Billy was coaching w/ me and Kac cost me the little I had left!!  Thanks to both Billy and Adam for joining and supporting the program in a special way. Finally new member Frank Giliberti '04 signed w/ the club. Frank was a terrific teammate and a person I have tremendous respect for. Welcome aboard Gilbo #1!!!

2/11/11

The Jumbo Baseball Diamond Club lineup continues to form. The next three members have stepped up to the plate. Another 1950 Tufts World Series team member from the class of 52 Jack Fitzsimmons is added to the lineup. Jack is a regular at the golf outing each May and is a staunch supporter of the program. 1998 Captain Roger Grenier follows Jack in the lineup. Roger was one of the best defensive players I've had the privilege to coach and continues to this day to be a stalwart for the program. Rounding out this portion of the lineup is Jon Mugar '98. Jon was a tremendous competitor on the hill for the Jumbos and is a wonderful advocate for Athletics @ Tufts. Jon is currently working on a movie and someday will produce a feature length film on some aspect of Tufts Baseball once we can get all the disclaimers signed!!

We are pleased to announce the first five members to show their support for Tufts Baseball by renewing their membership to the Diamond Club.  Leading the way is a member of the 1950 Tufts World Series team; Ken Fettig '52. Two stalwarts Tom Snarsky, '85, who once had the longest hitting streak in the nation and Steve Lapham '02 who still holds the TU record w/ 3 shutouts in a season join Ken in the opening day lineup. John Casey '80 follows them into the Diamond Club for 2011. Colin Cash appropriately hits in the 4 spot with his 2011 membership.  Colin's business Atlantic Asphalt & Equipment has agreed to continue to be the sponsor of The  Tufts Baseball Alumni Golf Tournament as well. There is a long tradition of pride and excellence associated with Tufts Baseball and Tufts University as evidenced by the support of all of our alums. Don’t hesitate to contact us at john.casey@tufts.edu if you have any questions about the Diamond Club.  Thanks Ken, Tom, Steve and Colin, you’ve gotten us off to a great start.  That’s what the top of the lineup is supposed to do!

JUMBOS TAKE PART IN FOJ RACE 10/4/09

28 players got up early last Sunday and drove to Amherst College to take part in a Friends of Jaclyn 5K/Fun walk fundraiser for the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation in honor of our teammate Adrian. It was a great day and the players did an outstanding job. Jack Dilday was the first  Jumbo to cross the finish line followed closely by Tom Hill and Matt Collins. Coach Brian Casey was the only coaching staff member to run the 5K and finished immediately after the three-legged dog!!! Coach Case and Coach Kenny had a nice kick to finish out the fun walk. It was a memorable event and especially touching at the pre-race rally as several parents spoke. Adrian is doing well and we look to have him become even more involved with the program this season as he makes great strides.

Our Teammate

We would like to introduce the newest member of our team.  His name is Adrian Misic.  We adopted him last fall through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.  Many had the honor to meet Adrian at the golf tournament.  He is a very special kid and we plan on having him as part of the Jumbos for many years to come.

To learn more about the FOJ foundation please click here.
