Alumni Weekend 2018

The Golf Tournament

The weather was warm, the golf course was in great shape, and Uncle Joe was was in great spirits to run yet another great putting contest! What more could you ask for for our annual golf tournament? We finally figured it out with the golf gift of a Jumbo Winter hat just in time for the warm spring weather! Look for a pair of mittens to go with it next year!!

We had a field of 126 golfers for this years outing and everyone seemed to have a great time. Below are the results of the tournament:

1st Place: Tim Crowell, Don Leach, Tom Walsh '89, Tom McDavitt

2nd Place: Jon Mugar, Kevin Godin, John Carco, Aaron Murphy

3rd Place: Bryan McDavitt, David Saltman, Brendan Casey, Paul Barry

Last Place: Biff Crowley, Steve Lapham, Jeremy Davis, Dave Martin

Closest to the Pin: Mike Spates (sorry Coach Clarke)

Long Drive: Zack Smotherman

The "True Jumbo" award was presented to Tom Howard A'13 for his dedication to the program and his support with so many of our events.

Dave Frew once again performed admirably as our master of ceremonies although many people did say they missed hearing him on the raffle sales early in the day. Following the conclusion of our post tournament banquet the event moved on to Matt Kelly's for continued revelry. Two stars of the evening Joe Ferrera and Kevin Godin were particularly articulate at Matt Kelly's as the pool table was run by Coach Kenny and Coach McDavitt and there was a constant battle for the one dart over at the dart board. All in all it was a great day to be a Jumbo and to be with good friends.

The plans for the new field were presented by Matt Lyman to the group and all seemed to be excited about the project. You could sense a lot of energy building and the committee is excited to begin raising the money to make our new field a reality and give the Jumbo Baseball Program one of the best facilities in all of D3 Baseball!

The Alumni Game

Alumni - 0 Jumbos - 6

The alumni were doing a lot of talking at Matt Kelly's the night before the game and perhaps them staying late at Matt Kelly's hampered their Saturday performance. It was a great day to play baseball and the Jumbos jumped out to a lead off Speros Varinos in the bottom of the first on a Nick Falkson RBI single. The game was an epic battle for three innings with Speros Varinos keeping the Jumbos at bay and Sam Sager and Charlie McQuinn grinding out solid at bats against the Jumbo staff. The bottom of the third saw a James Howard to Scott Staniewicz to Wade Hauser relay to nail a Jumbo at the third base, not a shining moment for Coach Clarke coaching third. Tim Superko struck out 2 Jumbos to keep things in check but the Jumbos added 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th but Matt Rothstein got a strikeout to end the inning. Wade Hauser got the first hit of the contest for the Alumni and promptly stole second but the threat ended there. Tom Ryan twirled a 1, 2, 3 5th inning for the Alumni. It looked as though a rally was brewing in the top of the 6th with walks to Sam Sager and Matt Collins but that was stifled out. Christian Sbily pitched a scoreless 6th for the Alumni giving them some momentum heading into the final frame where James Howard singled and Cody McCallum walked to start the inning but the alumni weren't able to make a run at the Jumbos. John Cusack from the class of '69 came back to represent the Alumni, it was nice to have him back.

Post game we enjoyed a cookout, some stories were swapped before a group headed to the Pub to watch Beeger agonize the Kentucky Derby! Thanks to all the alumni who came and made out alumni weekend a great success. We look forward to more fun in 2019!
